Ruby at 10 months

Ruby and I were left alone the other day, we opted out of IKEA. While the other girls shopped we had a simple and carefree photoshoot.

I checked on the birds today and there was one who seemed to be dominating the nest. All looked healthy and I was careful not to let the sprinkler water that tree today. No need for that!
Tomorrow I'll get a picture so we can mark the progress of the chickie's growth.

A bit of an abstract view of curled bark on the riverbank. Shot with a shallow depth of field.
Subtle contrasts in this image are what attracted me to take it on the river.
New life/seedlings, Browns/greens all hovered up against the edge of the shoreline.
Our campsite was right next to a patch of ferns. I love the way the sun shined through their leaves.
This year I had the pleasure of canoeing in May. Although it was VERY windy the sun was bright and the sky was cloudless. I also went back to the future and shot with film and manual settings. Way fun.

Dandelion and Iris
Tim and I and our children. Amadeline 21, Andrew 24 and Adrienne 29.
Jonna has always been a beauty.
They came in for a quick visit the middle of May to celebrate their grandma's 80th birthday.
Steve is a musician from Nashville and Jonna lives in San Diego.

These three made a cute portrait from Wood Lake Nature Center. It was a chilly morning and they really needed a jacket, but their enthusiasm kept the photoshoot going.

Spring Indoors

I finally got a great sister shot of Lily and Ruby! Or should I say 3 shots
photoshopped into one? Would you ever know?

Super cute family weekend!

Jessie is an old family friend. She's just as cute now as she was when she was 6.
Her husband and son stopped in on Saturday to have portraits done. Jonah just
turned one...and what a cutie!

Lily will turn two on March 18!
She is talking up a storm and says the
cutest things.

Picket Fences

The old fence was outside a junkhouse in Lindstrom Minnesota. I paid 2o bucks for it and threw it in the back of the CRV . I brought the wooden fence home and it sat right next to the snowblower in the garage with it's rusty nails poking into the icy fridgid air for 5 months.
Yesterday it became part of my studio. Lily loved it and was happy to pose behind it.

What a baby!

Ruby just turned 5 months old already. Even though she's lifting her head very nice, the optimum shot on Saturday was me directing light straight down to the floor. Ruby had a blast playing the model...always answering with giggles and smiles.

One of the things that I find myself doing as a student of taking a self portrait. On this night I was looking for a casual portrait. I took some shots of myself and then Maddie showed up from College.
Camera's today reveal all the imperfections of skin.
And I now hear my dad's voice telling me to get out of the sun when I was 15 So sorry dad! I should have listened.

Maddie poses for my casual portrait assignment.

Thank you Maddie.

I love the way I lit Sara in this image.

I had a whole studio full of girls Sunday evening. Ruby stole the show with that adorable 5 month old smile.

So I a borrowing a anatomically correct baby from Prairie View this week. My friend Nancy said her name is Betsy. Betsy and I are going to become aces at lighting infants this week.

One secret I've learned taking portraits is to put lil' ones on chairs that are "slightly scary". Lily seems to be screaming..."Too scary grandma!"

Ruby is just the sweetest thing ever.
She's growing so fast....I feel guilty always pointing a camera at her to document stages.

Grandaughters Ruby and Lily had better things on their minds during
our recent photo session. Ruby was busy discovering her hand and Lily just wanted to get down. Both these ages 4 months and 22 months are portrait challenges for good old grandma. I will treasure this photo because I'm usually behind the camera.

Lily and the Lollipop
One more thing...
I am excited to welcome a new futon to my studio. It's black and offers a great height to camera vs. subject. Some of my best shots of Lily are when she was on an elevation of 1.5' from the floor.
The angle of my camera to subject is pleasing.

The futon? Answer: College donation.
Maddie insisted we bring it home. So we did over Christmas break. We both load the futon from her stinky fourplex in River Falls. It was the day of the ice. A four inch coating of ice by the tailgate of my CRV made a precariousness move. Just fit. Our seats were as far up as they go and our faces were pressed to the windshield all the way home. Needless to say we needed a nap upon arriving at the house.

Lilly Lollipop was taken on the futon.

Those two were in the mood for me to get a shot!

What joy they both bring to my life.
